Data can be quite vulnerable when you send it to someone over the Internet. If you don't want to have any worries when transferring important files, then you should try Silver Key Free Edition. It places a good selection of encryption tools at your disposal, which can make your files inaccessible without the correct password. This gives you the possibility of exchanging sensitive data over insecure channels, without any significant risks.

The software is available in free and paid editions, for Windows 2000 and all later versions. Installing Silver Key should not take more than a minute and the process does not require any special skills. The hardware requirements are modest, so you can run the software without any problems even on older machines.

When launched, Silver Key will present its supported operation on a small window. You only need to click a radio button, next to the operation you wish to perform and a wizard will guide you through the necessary preparations. Regardless of what task you intend to perform, the wizard will display clear and easy to understand instructions and it won't take you through a lengthy process.

When encrypting files, the program will also compress them into a single package, to make the files easier to send. Additionally, you can choose to create a self-extracting and self-decrypting package, so the recipient doesn't need Silver Key on his own computer. The package can be loaded in the software's analyzer, if you need to see and preview its contained file. Also, Silver Key can verify your packages for inconsistencies.

The software comes with a built-in file shredder as well. It gives you the option of shredding your files once they are encrypted and compressed. Alternatively, you can run the shredder separately and destroy any data, without encrypting anything.

Pros

Silver Key is lightweight and easy to use. The software can encrypt and compress data into a single package. The package can be made self-extracting and self-decrypting.

Cons

Passwords are not hidden when typing them. With Silver Key's powerful encryption capabilities, you will be able to share important data even over the most insecure channels.
